Celtic FC History

Celtic Football Club has a long and famous history, having always competed in the highest level of football in Scotland, currently the Scottish Premier League. Celtic Football Club was created in 1887, and played its first game in 1888. Celtic play home games at Celtic Park, which is the largest football stadium in Scotland. In 2005-06, Celtic Football Club home games attracted an average attendance of 58,149, making Celtic Football Club third only to Manchester United and Arsenal in average attendance for any football club in the UK.
In 1967, Celtic Football Club became the first British team to win the European Cup, which had previously been the preserve of Italian, Portuguese and Spanish clubs. Celtic remain the only Scottish club ever to have reached the final, and are one of only two clubs to have won the trophy with a team comprised entirely of players from the club's home country; all the players in the side was born within 30 miles of Celtic Park in Glasgow. In November 2010, Celtic Football Club set a Scottish Premier League record for the biggest win in SPL history defeating Aberdeen 9-0 at Celtic Park.

In 1889 Celtic Football Club reached the final of the Scottish Cup, this was Celtic Football Club first season in the competition, but lost 2-1 in the final. Celtic Football Club again reached the final of the Scottish Cup in 1892. In 1895, Celtic set the League record for the highest home score when they beat Dundee 11-0. In 1897 Celtic Football Club became a Private limited company and Willie Maley was appointed as the first “secretary-manager”. Among 1905 and 1910, Celtic Football Club won the Scottish League Championship six times in a row. In both 1907 and 1908 Celtic Football Club also won the Scottish Cup, this was the first time a Scottish club had ever won the Double.


In 1967 Celtic Football Club became the first British team, and the first from outside Spain, Portugal and Italy to win the competition. Celtic Football Club remains the only Scottish team to have reached the final. Martin O'Neill, a former European Cup winner with Nottingham Forest, took charge of the club in June 2000. Under his leadership, Celtic Football Club won three SPL championships out of five and in his first season in charge, Celtic Football Club also won the domestic treble, making O'Neill only the second Celtic manager to do so after Jock Stein. In 2003, around 80,000 Celtic Football Club fans traveled to watch the club competes in the UEFA Cup Final in Seville.

Celtic Football Club also had the 13th highest average attendance out of all the football clubs in Europe.


On 15 August 2011, Celtic Football Club financial results for year ending 30 June 2011 were published, showing that the club's debt had been reduced from over £5.5 million to £500,000 and that a pre-tax profit of £100,000 had been achieved. In comparison to the previous year which had a loss of over £2 million. Turnover also decreased by 15% from £63 million to £52 million.

In 1965, Celtic Football Club began publishing The Celtic View, the oldest club magazine in football. In 2004, Celtic Football Club launched their own digital TV channel called Celtic TV, which was available in the UK through Set anta Sports on satellite and cable platforms. Due to the collapse of Set anta in the UK in June 2009, Celtic TV stopped broadcasting, although the club hoped to find a new broadcast partner. Since 2002, Celtic's Internet TV channel Channel67 broadcast Celtic's own content worldwide and offered live match coverage to subscribers outside the UK. It also provided three online channels. In 2011, Celtic TV was relaunched as an online service and replaced Channel 67.

In the 2010-11 seasons, Celtic Football Club had the highest average home attendance of any Scottish club.
